After reading the Four Leaf’s 2025 Best of Long Island Rood Winners, I surprised to see that there was no category for Mexican Food. But there is one for the Best Taco which was won by Dirty Taco. I love Dirty Taco and all. I do think that they should have a category for Mexican Food. My nomination for best Mexican Food on Long Island will be Jalisco Cocina in Glen Cove.
It has a great atmosphere and vibe. When we were there on a Friday night, the joint was jumping. There were 2 birthday parties and the employees made it special for the patrons. They sang and brought out a sombrero for the event. While it may be culture appropriation by the guest. I do not believe in that crap. It was fun so enjoy it.
They serve margaritas in a true margarita glass. How much fun is that!
Appetizers
Their nachos are fresh and the salsa is really tasty. A definitely must order is their empanadas. The empanadas are stuffed with cheese and potato but their sauce is the secret on what makes this dish so special. It is a chicken and shrimp sauce. It complements the empanadas, nachos and other dishes so well.
Entrees
We opted to go with their combo packages. One Fajita and one assorted one. The combo fajita had great steak and chicken. I may have to order one of their steak entrees next time since they are so flavorful. They also delivered on the chicken and the shrimp. They get how to season their food.
The assorted combo contained all of my favorite Mexican food dishes like tacos, enchiladas and burritos. This should have been too much for one man but I come from the clean plate clubs and I upheld my membership!! What will be a knock against Jalisco for best Mexican is that some of their dishes are not authentic Mexican cuisine. They have hard shell tacos. The horror of it!! My response is that every Italian restaurant has some inauthentic dish like chicken parmigiana, Caesar salad or chicken scarpello. As a grumpy old man, I do not care if it meets the standard of some elitist restaurant critic. I am looking for the best food!
Summary
Jalisco Cocina Mexicana and Tequila Bar in Glen Cove should be considered for the first annual best Mexican Restaurant on Long Island. I will nominate them for best taco because they deliver on their hard shell one. I am sure some purist will complain.
