I was just playing pickleball and had a vigorous discussion with a friend on whether you should lob? As I dug into this question, I was surprised with how strong some opinions were in this game.
The argument against the lob is that is a low percentage shot due to the size of the court. It will be hard to get a winner since most people will be able to hustle back to return a lob. In order for the lob to be effective, you need to hit in the back 15% of the court. That creates a substantial risk of either going out or being short thereby allowing an easy winner for your opponent.
On the other hand, logs can be used strategically. I grant you that hitting winning lob shots in pickleball is extremely difficult. So this should not be your primarily reason for the lob. The key goals for a lob is to push your opponent’s back from the net to the baseline and to reset the point. By forcing your opponent to the baseline, they are now on the defensive and you have the ability to go on offensive.
When to Lob:
When opponents are close to the net: Lobs can force them back to the baseline.
During extended dinking rallies: Catching opponents off guard can be effective.
When you need to change the pace of the game: Lobs can disrupt your opponent’s rhythm.
Against opponents who struggle with overheads or have limited mobility: Lobs can exploit their weaknesses.
When hitting into the wind: It’s easier to control the lob.
As a defensive shot: To buy time and regain a better position on the court.
When Not to Lob:
If you’re not confident in your accuracy: Short lobs can be easily volleyed for a winner.
If your opponents are very good at overhead smashes: They can punish short lobs.
If you’re already in a strong offensive position: A lob may not be the best option in that situation.
How to Execute a Lob:
Soft grip and lift the ball: Use a dinking motion, but with more lift.
Push through your shoulder and legs: This adds power and height.
Aim for the non-dominant shoulder: This makes it harder for your opponent to return, even if the lob is short.
In Summary:
Lobs are a valuable tool in pickleball when used strategically, but it’s important to consider your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, and your own ability to execute the shot effectively.
