I found an interesting article on View From The Wing In it, Gary Leff found a couple of hotels near Walt Disney World that charges resort fees that are questionable at best especially considering the price of the rooms and the claimed resort offerings.
My favorite is the Developer Inn Highway, A Howard Johnson by Wyndham. You can get a room for $55.95 a night. But you will have to pay a resort fee of $14,70 a night. Here are the amenities included in this resort fee:
- 100% Smoke-Free Hotel
- 24-Hour Front Desk
- ATM
- Bus/Truck Parking
- Business Center
- Elevators
- Free Breakfast Buffet
- Free Parking
- Free Shuttle to Local Attractions
- Free WiFi
- Late Check-out Available
- Multilingual Staff
- Pet Friendly
- Pool – Outdoor
- Sundries/Mart
This is a long list of items claiming to be amenities but I do not consider an elevator, a mart and smoke free hotel real amenities that you can charge a resort fee for. They do point out that your get a free breakfast buffet, free shuttle, free parking and free wifi as part of the resort fee. It turns out that the pool has been out of service for months, the breakfast buffet is not restocked as it should be. Many guests have complained that when they went down to breakfast, there was food left with hours to go during breakfast service.

So it begs the question what is the resort fee for? They are not providing the real amenities listed on the site. In my opinion, this is a just a way to jack up the cost to their customers through Junk Fees. Wyndham should be ashamed of itself to allow their partner hotels do this to their clientele.
