Recently I was on a flight to Florida. As soon as I sat down, I pulled out my tablet and started watching a movie. With my headphones on, I drowned out all the commotion that was on the flight.
It turns out that the guy sitting next to me took another approach. He did not have any tablet, kindle, physical books or anything else to occupy his time on the flight. Even though I really wanted to understand what he was thinking, I did not really that much interest in making a new friend on this flight.
Later, I learned that this is a trend called “raw dogging it.” It seems that younger travelers on platforms fly with absolutely no entertainment or distractions. This means no movies, no music, no books, no phone games – just sitting with one’s thoughts (and perhaps the in-flight map).
While I do not understand, the concept of simply observing and being present during a flight isn’t entirely new. Before the advent of personal electronic devices and widespread in-flight entertainment systems, passengers often spent their time looking out the window, reading, or engaging in conversation. Maybe it does not make sense to me since I do not really have any deep thoughts or any desire to just observe life!!
The “Raw Dogging” Trend: A Deliberate Digital Detox?
The resurgence of this “raw dogging” approach could be interpreted in several ways:
- A reaction to constant digital stimulation: In our hyper-connected world, some individuals might be seeking moments of enforced digital detox, even in an environment like an airplane cabin.
- A quest for novelty or bragging rights: As with many internet trends, there might be an element of wanting to try something different and perhaps even share the experience online.
- A form of mindfulness (intentional or not): By removing distractions, passengers might find themselves more aware of their surroundings, the sensations of flight, and their own thoughts.
The Practicalities (and Potential Pitfalls) of “Raw Dogging”
While the idea of a screen-free flight might sound appealing to some, there are practical considerations:
- Boredom: For many, especially on long-haul flights, the lack of stimulation could lead to significant boredom and discomfort. This is me.
- Anxiety: For those who experience flight anxiety, distractions can be a crucial coping mechanism. Removing these could exacerbate their unease.
- Physical Needs: Some extreme interpretations of “raw dogging” on social media have even suggested forgoing food, water, and bathroom breaks, which is unequivocally unhealthy and potentially dangerous.
A Balanced Approach to Air Travel
Ultimately, how one chooses to spend their time on a plane is a personal decision. While the “raw dogging” trend highlights a potential desire for a less digitally saturated travel experience, it’s important to prioritize comfort, well-being, and basic needs.
It is definitely an approach to a select group of people. I will not be in that group!!
What are your thoughts on the “raw dogging” flight trend? Would you consider trying it, or do you prefer to stay entertained during your flights?
