Bring Ice on Your Next Flight

After seeing Terrell Davis being arrested for trying to get ice for his son on a United Flight and hearing that ice on planes may be harmful to your health, I was wondering how you can get a cold drink on a flight. The clear answer is to get a beverage before you board your flight.

How do you do that? You can buy a cold beverage at the airport but it will not be ice cold. Being an American and feeling that no drink can be too cold, I want a drink that has ice in it or covered by ice. As I understand it, you can not get ice in an airport outside of a bar or a airline club. Not all airports offer these options or make them convenient.

The practical answer is to bring your own. The challenge is to get it through security and living in the world we live it, you know that you are limited to a maximum of liquids of 3.4 ounces (which would not cut it for me).

After a little research, I found that the TSA allows frozen drinks through security as long as they are completely frozen solid when presented for screening. If your drink is partially melted, slushy or has any liquid at the bottom of your bottle, it must meet the 3-1-1 liquids requirement. That means you can brink your partially frozen drink in a quart sized bag.

You have two options, first you can totally freeze your beverage in a non-insulated water bottle. Just drink the excess liquid right before you get to security. Once you pass through security you just have to wait until the drink melts which should take between 45 minutes to an hour and half. The downside is that the bottle will get sweaty as the drink melts.

The other option is to bring a insulated water bottle (I like the Owala Water Bottle). Fill the water bottle with ice before you head to the airport. The ice will not melt for several hours so it will not be an issue with security. Once through security, you can then add your beverage to the water bottle. You can fill it with water at one of the water bottle stations at the airport or buy a beverage at one the stores in the airport. Either way, your drink will be cold and delicious. I highly recommend you bring your own cold drink onto a plane to avoid all the hassles if you do not.
