Just saw this article in which Southwest announced that it was getting rid of its open seating approach and moving towards assigned seating. Also, they will launching red eye flights. These changes make sense.
I know that when I fly Southwest, I have some stress on which seat I was going to get but with assigned seats that issue will go away. Southwest confirmed this by saying that 80% of its customers prefer assigned seats over the open seating approach.
They also included new premium legroom option which will generate higher seat revenue. In fact, I would wager that all of the changes that Southwest is implementing is going to generate incremental revenue. Just wait to see the additional cost for assigned seating.
Don’t get me wrong, I will be a willing paying customer to get enhanced experience but I do not know if most of Southwest’s clientele will be so on board with the additional costs. Southwest had a reputation as a low cost airline that includes bags for free. I guess that may change.
