Stop Forgetting Things! The Travel Drawer Method

I used to travel a whole bunch for business.  It was comforting that I would have my travel bag ready to go.  It is such a pain when you are on the road and it dawns on you that you forgot something.  This realization typically happens either late at night or in an area in which you cannot get the item that you forgot.  As my travel decreased, I now fall into the category of someone who forgets things.  It may have something to do with the fact that I am also getting older!!

A friend suggested that I put together a travel drawer of the things that I need on a business or personal trip.  Just what I need, another task to do??  ☹ But after forgetting some collar stays on a recent destination wedding trip, I decided to give it go.  Here is my guide on what to include in your travel drawer.  By the way, it does not have to be a literal draw, a plastic container would suffice.

The Basics

These items should always be kept in a safe and convenient place:

  • Passport and Travel Documents: Keep your passport, visas, travel insurance, and other important documents together in a safe, easily accessible spot.  With your passport, set a reminder in your calendar to renew it 6 months before its expiration.  I have more than a few friends who ran around to renew their passports prior to a trip.
  • Wallet and Money: Include some cash in various currencies and credit cards
  • Electronics: Pack your phone, charger, portable battery pack, travel adapter, and any other electronic devices you need.
  • Copies:  Store electronic and printed copies of your passport, travel documents and credit cards in case of emergency

Toiletries and Personal Care

Prepare your travel toiletries and personal care items:

First Aid and Health Essentials

Having a mini first aid kit can be a lifesaver. Include:

Clothing and Accessories

While it may be difficult to pack your travel clothes, you can prepare for their accessories:

  • Packing Cubes: If space will be limited, packing cubes are essential.
  • Versatile Accessories: Having a spare umbrella and hat will come more in play than you think

Travel Gadgets and Extras

Now, we get to the items that will help you out but it is always hard to find the room in a drawer for these things:

  • Travel Pillow and Blanket: For long flights, a travel pillow and compact blanket can be a game-changer.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated on the go with a durable, reusable water bottle.  You can always put other liquids in this bottle!
  • Apple Airtag: Rest assured that you will know where your bag is when you land.

Conclusion

Creating the ultimate travel drawer is all about organization and preparation. By keeping your travel essentials neatly stored and easily accessible, you can reduce stress and focus on enjoying your journey. Whether you are a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler, a well-organized travel drawer can make a world of difference.
