Au Revoir for Now: Centre Pompidou Closing for Major Renovations

class=wp-image-6320/

We just found out that the Centre Pompidou in Paris is closing in the fall of 2025 for five years.  They will be doing extensive renovations during this period. The entire facility will be closed!

They reported that they are closing:

  • Safety: The building is aging and needs to meet current health and safety standards
  • Sustainability: The building needs to be more energy efficient
  • Accessibility: The building needs to be more accessible for people with reduced mobility

What will happen during the closure?

  • The Centre Pompidou’s collection and programming will be hosted by other cultural institutions in Paris and around the world
  • A new space, the Centre Pompidou Francilien, will open in Massy, Essonne in fall 2026
  • The Centre Pompidou will continue to share its works and exhibition material with cultural venues in other cities

When will it reopen?

The Centre Pompidou is expected to reopen in 2030. The renovations will also include removing asbestos from all facades.

There has a bunch of negative feedback.  While no one argues that the facility should be upgraded after 5 years.  Some people are fretting that they are losing access during this period.  They feel that they should do the upgrades in stages so that they could keep the other parts of the facility open.

While that sounds great in theory, it will definitely delay the works and the timing.  I would also be concerned when they remove the asbestos.  There is a possibility of it being airborne and infecting some visitors.  There are a few other issues that make keeping it open during the renovations challenging.  I look at it as short term pain for long term benefit.

If you want to visit the Centre Pompidou before 2030, then head there before this coming fall!!
