Biggest Complaint of Traveling with an Electric Vehicle

After traveling with my Electric Vehicle, many thoughts ran through my mind about the differences in traveling with an EV and an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle. Most people will say that range anxiety is their biggest concern because they do not know where they can charge their car. I think that this concern is overblown because there are several networks of charging stations right off highways.

Others will say that their biggest concern is the amount of time it takes to charge the charge and this is valid. If you charge to 100%, it will definitely take longer than filling up an ICE car and then going to the bathroom. It may take 45 minutes or so. A valid concern. The trick is to charge to 80% because charging slows down as it goes over 80% so you can charge to 80% in 20 minutes and the balance of the time is to get to 100%. It would be better to charge to 80% more often than to charge to 100% once.

My biggest concern is the status of the charging networks. It seems that more of these charging stations have broken pumps than before. If there are broken, then you tend to have to wait for another one to open up.

Also, a bunch of these charging stations are in superstore parking lots and other semi remote areas. When you stop to charge up, there is not a lot going on there. You may be able to find a bathroom and a restaurant but that may be all. I had one that was near a hotel and a closed Cracker Barrel. As a result, I had to sneak into the hotel to use their bathroom. They were not too happy about that. As a result, I spend as little time as possible there and moved on to the next charging station.

My key takeaway is that we really need to build up the charging networks and have them located in convenient areas. I love my EV but I do feel the support system needs to improve.
