Best Thing About American Restaurants

After traveling through Europe during a heat wave, I have never been so happy to have dinner in an American restaurant where they served a large glass of ice water as soon as we sat down.

My experience in several European countries is that when you eat at a restaurant, they typically ask what you would like to drink. This is usually focused on wine, beer or bottled water. They will also offer you a coke. Tap water is not the first or second proposal. With bottled water, you have your choice of sparkling or flat.

What is not offered is ICE. For me, drinks can never be too cold. I am such an American that I want cold drinks to be colder. I do not mind if they end up being watered down. I just love the refreshing feeling of ice cold beverages, especially water.

I would probably not take an ice cube in a glass of white wine. That does not seem right. But line up a full glass of ice for me and I will be a happy camper. So as you prepare for your travels overseas, set your expectation to luke warm beverages. When you get back home, you can enjoy the cool refreshing taste of an iced beverage.
