Fort Lauderdale is Part of the USA

We were traveling from Toronto to Fort Lauderdale last week. As you may know, there is a dedicated line at the Toronto Pearson Airport for travelers to the USA. When I was at security, I was informed that my destination, Fort Lauderdale, was not in the USA so I would need to change lines. The security agent was incensed when I tried to explain how wrong he was. Even when I brought up a map on my phone and showed that Fort Lauderdale was only a few miles from Miami, he would not budge. He did acknowledge that Miami was in both Florida and the USA.

Aside from questioning the quality of the Canadian education, I did not know what to do. I did ask for his supervisor which took a considerable amount of time. Once the big man arrived, he did fix the problem and acknowledged that Fort Lauderdale is a city in the USA. So in the end, I was on the right line and I was able to proceed and board my plane.

The end result was a wasted 30 minutes and added frustration in travel. If you need another reason on why you have to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight (internationally, maybe 3 hours), this is the perfect example. You sometimes have to deal with absurd situations like this.

Also, even in the world where information is at your finger tips, some times facts take a back seat to ignorance.
