Shark Valley Bike Trail — Unusual Day Activity

If you are looking for an adventure off the beaten path activity in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, you should try biking the Shark Valley Trail in the Everglades National Park. Much to my disappointment, there are no sharks in Shark Valley. They call it Shark Valley since the Shark River and the Little Shark River. But on the positive side you can see alligators and a host of other wildlife.

They have a 15 mile paved loop that has an observation tower in the middle so you can see close to 20 miles of the Everglades. With a flat paved road, the biking is easy and you can enjoy seeing the wildlife.

For those visiting from out of town, you can rent bikes for $25 at the Shark Valley Tram Tours or you can bring your own. Also, Shark Valley Tram Tours conducts a tram service for $31 a person with knowledgeable guides.

The best time of year to see alligators is during the dry season (from December through April). You can possibly see alligators outside of that period but do not be disappointed if you miss them.

A couple of things to keep in mind. If you are biking, do not forget to bring sunscreen and as much water in water bottles as you can carry since there is no water along the loop and it can get hot out there. Also, you should be aware that the entry fee to the Everglades National Park is $35 per car.

This adventure will not disappoint!!
